Talking to myself (On Revisiting)

“I am going again.”

“Returning?”

“No.”

“Going again means returning.”

“It means revisiting. When you return you go with what had been.”

“And you are not?”

“Yes. I am not.”

“So, you have forgotten what had been?”

“I have forgotten what never had been.”

“If it was not there, then what is there to forget?”

“What could have been…”

“Isn’t possibility also real?”

“Possibilities are illusory.”

“But based on something tangible…”

“No. A candle melting is tangible, but when you want to melt a stone…”

“Why would you want to?”

“Because I deal with stones.”

“You go where stones are, don’t you?”

“Not quite. Stones sprout from beneath the soil; they fall off structures; they loosen from paved pathways.”

“Is this not a kind of melting?”

“They hurt.”

“Hot candle wax can cause hurt too.”

“I have already dealt with the flames.”

“Does it lessen the pain?”

“It makes you realise that you can shape wax, you cannot shape stones.”

“Then what are you returning for?”

“Revisiting…I am revisiting gaps.”

“What will you get from there?”

“I am not going there to get anything, but to give.”

“Fill it?”

“Never. I will set my eyes on them to see that right beside the gaps there is a lot more.”

“And you will take that?”

“I did not take it then, so why should I do it now?”

“Then what is the purpose?”

“To relive illusions.”

What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden.

"Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind
Cannot bear very much reality.
Time past and time future
What might have been and what has been"

Thanks for this, TE. (where's the 'S'?!)
